Welcome to Brown History Newsletter
Welcome to Brown History. Thank you so much for signing up.
When I was growing up, I was obsessed with Western publications like The New Yorker magazine. To a young me, they were spaces that represented the literary and cultural centre of the world. One day, it occurred to me that there really wasn’t much content in there that I could take with me as a South Asian diaspora kid growing up in Canada. It made me feel unseen, unheard and kind of lonely. So I looked elsewhere for knowledge and understanding of my place in the world, a long journey from which BrownHistory was born. In my years working on Brown History, I have met so many talented South Asian writers who are brilliant and intelligent, who hold sophisticated viewpoints, who have such a deep understanding and respect for the culture and history, but who only face closed doors and rejections. Not many places are willing to publish their thoughtful pieces because it isn’t mainstream enough. I hope this newsletter can be a platform where South Asian writers can share their works and to become a platform available to all subcultures, not only catered towards an elite crowd.
To participate, please send me a pitch by email at brownhistory1947@gmail.com. It can be about anything; food, history, culture, relationships, news, politics - all through a South Asian lens. To be transparent- I can’t pay anything right now. However, my goal once people start signing up is to start using that money to pay writers for their labour and hard work. Hopefully one day, we can build something here that even The New Yorker would look up to.
In the meantime, tell your friends!
