How Folklore Can Break Caste Hegemony Within Academic Philosophy

Dalit woman of Bombay (Mumbai) - 1942

In the realm of academic philosophy, entrenched barriers of exclusivity and hegemony have long overshadowed its pursuit of truth. Rooted in Eurocentric ideologies, it has marginalized diverse voices and perpetuated systemic inequalities, particularly evident in the shadow of caste hegemony. However, there lies a potent antidote within the folds of folklore—a treasure trove brimming with the wisdom of marginalized communities. This essay dares to advocate for a paradigm shift, urging philosophy to shed its chains of exclusivity and engage deeply with the narratives of folklore. By embracing these untold stories, we embark on a journey towards a more inclusive and emancipatory philosophy—one that dismantles the oppressive structures of caste hegemony through critical examination and celebration of diverse perspectives. Central to folklore is the power of narrative, a force that subverts hegemonic structures and challenges established hierarchies. In the Indian context, where caste oppression has long permeated societal fabric, folklore serves as a potent tool for resistance and liberation. By examining folktales through an anti-caste lens, we unveil narratives that disrupt caste hegemony, celebrating resilience, solidarity, and the pursuit of justice.
