The northern state of Punjab, India, saw the merciless murder of Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu in June 2000. Her husband, Sukhwinder Singh, or better known as his nickname, Mithu, survived but was brutally stabbed and sustained severe head injuries. The killing of women is not unusual in India, much less questioned. Yet, this Romeo-Juliet love story between Jassi and Mithu gathered international interest, for which it was labelled an ‘honour killing’.
